Be sure to include in your answer an explanation of what the cause meant to both Union and Confederate soldiers, as well as the importance of race and slavery in their respective decisions to fight. One historian has called Reconstruction a “splendid failure.” Analyze the goals, successes, and failures of those who attempted to reconstruct southern society. Given the times, do you think that the historian’s statement is an accurate assessment of the post-war years in the South? Why or why not?
