Description

[1] Use matrix optics to evaluate the following designs. The purpose here is to see if you understand how to perform matrix calculations with simple examples, use MATLAB and graphical solutions when appropriate.

[a]Consider the Edmunds Scientific PCX lens A32-974. The first surface has a radius of curvature of 77.52mm. The second surface is flat so its radius is infinity. The thickness is 9mm and the index is 1.517 (BK7 glass). Find the principal planes, focal length and total power. The solution included for you.

The system power is 0.0066692. The focal length is 149.942. The front principal plane is located 0 from the first surface. The rear principal plane is located -5.9328 from the rear surface. Notice the front principal plane is right on the surface.

[b] Two thin lenses with focal lengths of 30mm and -60mm are separated by 15mm of air. A 3mm high object is located 120mm left of the first (+30mm focal length) lens. Find the following:

focal length, rear principal plane, image position and image height

[c] Analyze a Cassegrain telescope operating in air. Keep the sign convention in mind. The radius of the primary mirror is –200, and the secondary mirror is –50. The separation is 80 and it is all in air. Find the principal plane locations, effective focal length.
