OBJECTIVE

The objective of this assignment is to create a quick, two-minute self-introduction tool for making a quick but memorable impression on potential employers or anyone.  One of the most commonly asked requests in an interview is: “Tell me about yourself.” If you can be brief but say something distinctive and memorable, you will have an advantage over other candidates.

COMPONENTS

The two-minute self-introduction should:

  • Be brief, so the listener will not get bored.

  • Highlight what make you unique.

  • Reveal information not necessarily found in your résumé.

  • Explain your interest in the firm.

  • Show how your goals and background can benefit the firm.

  • Encourage the listened to want to know more.

  • Highlight aspects the listener to want to know more.

  • Highlight the aspects the listener is interested in.

  • Market you- especially your skills, knowledge, and ability

  • Be truthful but positive.

  • Be adapted to fit the listened and his or her firm.

  • Tell an interesting story, in a conversational way.

  • Not mention dates or years, unless asked by the interviewer

  • Not include anything that is potentially biasing or could be held against you.

FORMAT

The format should follow the basic pattern below but you should make adjustments according to your own unique history, demographic, context of the company with whom you are interviewing. If you do not have enough work experience, spend more time on your educational experience, or visa-versa.

  • Early life -   15 seconds. Who are you? Where do you come from” What are your roots? Include any unique or memorable fact or early experience or interest that connects to the desired job, even by inference.

  • Education – 15 seconds. Degrees, honors, major, leadership, community activity?

  • Work Life-45 seconds. Accomplishments—not just duties. How did your interests lead you in this direction? Projects at work about which you were passionate? What experience did you gain that is relevant to the listener?

  • Sales Pitch-45 seconds. What do you have to offer? Key skills you have gained from school, work, leadership or relationships? How do you want to use your key skills? How do you key skills fit the job or firm? End with “I would like to work for… [company] because…… Do not forget to thank them for the opportunity to talk with them!
