Discussion Questions What is the name product, and which area of substance use does it cover? Is there a slogan and/or logo or the product? What is it/are they? What types of characters are portrayed in this advertisement (i.e. gender, age, physical attributes, etc)? If you do not have a character, do you have an object that is portrayed in a certain way (i.e. refreshing looking with water dripping down the bottle)? Explain. Describe the atmosphere of the advertisement (i.e. location, settings, number of people, colours, mod, feelings, other images, etc). Identify 3 things about the product that the manufacturer wants you to believe? Name 3 negative consequences of using the product that the advertisement is not telling you. Which selling strategies are used in this ad? A minimum of 3 should be referenced, along with an explanation. (Refer to the “Advertising Tactics” handout at the end of this doc) Do you believe the messages in the ad? Why or why not? Who do you think is the audience for your ad? How can you tell? Why do you think the person who created this ad has presented substance use in this way? What strategies can you use to respond effectively to these influences/prevent yourself from being influenced?
