Students will write a historical paper on an aspect of social responsibility. The topic is on the Progressive era. In the late 1800’s there were a number of problems related to the cities, states, and nation caused by industrialization. There were monopolies; organized crime; corruption in politics; no regulations for sanitation, health, food preparation, prescription medicines; no building codes; and many other problems. Write about the muckrakers and other progressives and how they brought about social changes. How did they view social responsibility in order to correct problems in society? Who were these writers and what did they write about? What politicians contributed to the Progressive movement? What did they do to improve society? What was the Gospel of Wealth and how did those followers view their social responsibility to society? What were the positive results of the Progressive era at the local, state, and national levels?
