Objectives
This assignment requires students to use their sociological imagination to explore sociological issues such as the family, consumption, inequality etc. that are prevalent in print advertisements. Students will critically analyze themes present in the advertisement and describe and evaluate these in relation to key sociological perspectives and concepts in relation to global issues.
Short Description
Using course content, students will generate an analysis of some common or popular advertisements through a sociological lens as it relates to globalization, the economy, the family, or the digital divide.
Instructions
Pick an image-based advertisement for a product (Nike, Apple, McDonalds, etc.). Drawing on a minimum of two (2) unit readings and using your sociological imagination, in three pages (1500 words), describe and evaluate the sociological themes (consumerism, race, ethnicity, gender, employment etc.) prevalent in this advertisement and explain how/if this fits within a global perspective. Think about questions like:
