Instructions
- You are asked to design a
small home for a client of your choice who has accessibility issues or a
disability that requires special consideration.
- Design the spaces to suit
the client and accessible issues your client faces
- The style and colour scheme
for this project must be one that is NOT yet represented in your portfolio
- You have the option of
creating the project in a power point or posting digitally on your website
or WordPress etc.
- Project will be evaluated on
overall professional impression, neatness, accuracy of drawings, essay,
budget, spelling and professional presentation
- Due by the end of week 13 in
dropbox provided that week. 35% of final grade

Floor plan of home in ¼ inch scale
DETAILS
- Create this home using
AutoCAD on white paper OR hand drawn in black permanent pigment liner

REQUIREMENTS
- Draw in ¼ inch scale
- Exterior walls ¼ inch,
Interior walls: ⅛ inch thick
- All ceiling heights: 9 feet
- Overall interior dimensions
approximately 30 feet wide and 38 feet long not including patio
- Add overall home dimensions
on drawing. No breakdowns required.
- May adapt slightly for door
styles, windows, cabinets, small size changes of rooms are allowed up to 1
foot each direction
- Overall home should still
look the same after minor changes
- Draw realistic sizes of
rooms, doors and hallways
- Home consists of 2 bedrooms,
living room, kitchen, laundry and 2 bathrooms (1 with tub and the other
with shower)
- Living room has fireplace
and built in cabinets on sides
- Porch is located at the
bottom right of drawing
- Patio is at top right of
drawing
- Add flooring, furniture and
counter textures to entire home
- Colour each room with Prisma
markers
- Add Scale, directional arrow
ROOM PLANS:
- Create a floor plan layout
for each room of the home on the drawing and label all furniture
- Print on each item to
identify or create a legend identifying furniture by number.
- Print on each item to

Electrical overlay and Legend
DETAILS
- Add electrical overlay for
entire home showing all lighting, plugs, switches, lamps
- Add light path from switches
to appropriate lighting
- Add electrical legend on
right side of the overlay
- Show a view of the overlay
on its own and one on the home drawing
- Electrical legend to be
typed in black uppercase lettering
- Symbols to match your
drawing and must be the size of the fixture. Example: show scale size of
ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, track lighting, pot lights the same size as
on the drawing
- Label symbols with size of
fixtures. Example: 4 inch pot light or 12 inch pendant light
Each room of the home
DETAILS
- Create a page/slides for
each room of the home
- Add samples for each room of
the home showing flooring, main furniture and accessories, paint/wallpaper
- You do not have to show
samples of everything in the room, however include the main colours,
textures and accents
- Each room can show photo
examples and fabric samples that show texture and pattern
- Photos to be in colour only
if it is the colour you are using in the design. If not, show in black and
white photo only and show fabric sample of the item with the photo.
(photos must be copyright compliant)
- Identify each photo as to
what it is in the room. Example: add sample and label it as bedding
- Show what accessibility
items are included in each room
Essay in five (5) sections
1. COVER PAGE
- Title
- Your name
- Class name
- Semester Date
2. INTRODUCTION PAGE
- Who client is, lifestyle,
how the home is used by the client and what the decorator is trying to
achieve in their design. (about 1page)
3. STYLE DEFINITION PAGE
- Description of style used in
this. Give a history of the style and how to define it. (1-2 pages)
4. ESSAY
- The purpose of the essay is
to get a clear mental picture of the space designed
- Explain how the room was
designed to be suitable for the client and their disability concerns. In
your own words, write an essay describing design plans for each room of
the home. (2-4 pages). Essay will be checked for plagiarism
- Write in paragraph format
with no topic titles
- Add word count at bottom of
essay portion (minimum 1,000 words)
- Essay must be typed in 3rd
person format in a manner that is easy to understand by the reader
- This is NOT to be a letter
to the client but a business proposal
- Describe mood, how room is
used, what furniture and materials look like and how used to achieve your
design
- Describe how the room fits
the needs of your client
- Include colours selected,
textures, describing style etc. and any other description required for the
reader to get a clear vision of your design
