Description

you will model and analyse two buildings with the same load Scaled Annual Average electricity consumption (kWh/day) but with different functions (Commercial vs Residential); use July as peak month. You will also test the buildings in two different locations,AUE  in dubai  and at the University of Edinburgh; use HOMERS’s “Download From Internet” function for all required climatic data.

You will model and simulate eight scenarios shown later in this brief. You will note which configuration is best for each scenario. Then you are to compare the results of the different scenarios, details below, report & DISCUSS your findings in terms of why the results are similar/different between the different scenarios in each comparison.

The Grid Connected (GC) configurations operate on an Annual Net Metering (ANM) arrangement. The utility company does not pay the customer any money if the ANM was positive at the end of the year.

Use the following inputs for the different configurations (anything not specified is to be left at the programmes’ default value/setting). Use the built-in HOMER Optimizer to search for the right size of each component.

1) PVs:

Properties: Life 25 years, Derating factor 90%, Slope 25 degrees, Azimuth (degrees W of S) 0, Ground reflectance 20%, efficiency of 18% at 25 Co, efficiency drops by 0.25% per Co.

Cost data: Capital cost (750 $/kWp), Replacement cost (700 $/kWp), O&M (5 $/yr)

2) Wind Turbine:

Generic 10kW, life (25 yrs), hub height (50 m), Capital cost (18000 $), Replacement cost (13000 $), O&M (180 $/yr)

3) Battery (Lead-Acid):

Life (5 years), Capital cost (200 $/kWh), Replacement cost (200 $/kWh), O&M (5 $/yr)

4) Battery (Li-Ion):

Life (12.5 years), Capital cost (300 $/kWh), Replacement cost (300 $/kWh), O&M (5 $/yr)

5) Convertor:

Life (15 years), Capital cost (300 $/kW), Replacement cost (300 $/kW), O&M (5 $/yr)

6) Grid electricity:

Energy cost: 0.16 $/kWh (high demand rate) & 0.08 $/kWh (low demand rate)

Demand charges: 15 $/kW/month (applies only during high demand period)

High demand period starts 11 AM and lasts for 6hr; ONLY during weekdays.

7) Diesel generator:

Life (18,000 hrs), Capital cost (200 $/kW), Replacement cost (200 $/kW), O&M (0.01 $/hr)

Cost of diesel fuel ($/L): 0.55 $/Litre

8) Financial data:

Interest rate (6.5%), inflation rate (1.5 %), project life (25 years)

9) Loads:

AC load (average of 3.5 MWh/day; for BOTH commercial and residential cases), DC load (average of 250 kWh/day; community profile for BOTH commercial and residential cases)

Scenarios to be modelled:

a) Grid connected (GC) commercial building in Dubai: Grid + PV + WT + DG + batteries (LA &/or Li-Ion)

b) Grid connected (GC) commercial building in Dubai: Grid + PV + WT + DG + batteries (LA &/or Li-Ion) WITH interest rate sensitivity analysis (i= 9%, 12%, 16%, and 25%)

c) GC residential building in Dubai: Grid + PV + WT + DG+ batteries (LA &/or Li-Ion)

d) Off grid (OG) commercial building in Dubai: PV + WT + DG+ batteries (LA &/or Li-Ion)

h) OG commercial building in Edinburgh: PV + WT + DG+ batteries (LA &/or Li-Ion)

i) OG residential building in Edinburgh: PV + WT + DG+ batteries (LA &/or Li-Ion)

Comparisons to be conducted and DISCUSSED:

2) The GC commercial buildings in Dubai and Edinburgh

3) The GC residential buildings in Dubai and Edinburgh

4) The GC and OG commercial building in Dubai

5) The GC and OG residential building in Dubai

6) The OG commercial and residential buildings in Dubai
