Rhetorical criticism is audience-centered, focused on the “transaction” between text and reader. Historical criticism focuses on the historical context of the literary text, including its author. Ideological criticism applies ideas outside of literature (e.g., psychology, mythology, feminism, postcolonialism) to literary texts.
