1. Project description
Work in groups of three or four and extend the MATLAB program developed as part of Project 1 to
include a 2D thermal analysis module, implementing the mathematical modelling discussed in the
online sessions and videos uploaded. The amended MATLAB code must be suitable to analyse 2D
stress fields of both plane stress and plane strain cases as was the outcome of Project 1 and now also
2D potential type problems such as temperature distribution in 2D cases with mixed boundary
conditions. Further, enhance the auto-mesh generation module developed in Project 1 to add more
functionalities such as graded triangular mesh generation and better user interface to effectively
descretise complex 2D domains into appropriate triangular finite elements in order to capture the
variation of the functionals close to the reality. Use the program developed to analyse and display the
critical parameters of the stress and thermal fields of a single point carbide cutting insert. Assume
plane stress conditions and a steady state thermal field at a cross section of the carbide insert at half
the width of the chip.
