Description

Below are six essay questions.  Refer to the Terms and Conditions quiz for more details regarding these questions.

Question 1.

In Chapter 1 you learned about three different communication models (action, interactive, and transactional):

1. In your own words (not copied from the text), provide a complete definition of each model. Be sure to include an explanation of specifically how each model differs from the others.

2. Finally, come up with two real world examples for the communication exchange presented in each model. Make sure to explain how each example fits the model. For example: "An instructor lecturing in front of her class would be an example of the transactional model of communication, as both the students and instructors are sending and receiving messages from each other simultaneously. A student quietly texting under their desk is sending the message to the instructor that they are bored at the same time the instructor is communicating lecture content to the student."

*Please note the classroom example cannot be used in your own essay.

Question 2.

Chapter 2 provides six different sets of cultural dimensions: high/low power distance; high/low uncertainty avoidance; individualist vs. collectivist; masculine vs. feminine; long term vs. short term time orientation; indulged or restrained.

1. Choose 5 of the above 6 sets. In your own words, provide a definition for both sides of each set. In other words, if high/low power distance is one of the sets you choose, you'll write a definition for both high and low power distance.

2. Write an original, real world example for both sides of each set you've chosen. By original and real world, I mean think of specific examples of this cultural dimension as it occurs in the world around us. Be sure to fully explain each example.

For example, if I was coming up with an example for low and high power distance, it might look something like this: "My COM 101 class at TMCC is a low power distance culture as everyone refers to the instructor by his first name, we have collaborative discussions that we all participate in equally instead of lectures, and most of his students end up becoming Facebook friends with him. On the other hand, my physics class at TMCC is high power distance. We are expected to address the professor by Dr., and are not allowed to ask any questions during class. If we pass him in the hall, we are expected to only interact with him if he does first, as he's not interested in establishing social, outside of the classroom relationships with his students."

*Please note the class examples, and the examples used in your previous response papers, cannot be used in your own essay.

Question 3.

Chapter 3 introduces the concepts of perception. The book identifies five different psychological influences that can impact the way we perceive another person or situation.

1. Identify the five types and, in your own words, provide complete definitions for each.

2. Additionally, come up with an original detailed and clear example of each type. Be sure to explain how the example fits the type you've paired it with. Examples must be original and cannot come from the examples provided in the textbook.

Question 4.

Chapter 06 introduces kinesics, which is the study of all nonverbal communication that is related to body movement. There are five (5) kinesics categories (emblems, illustrators, affect displays, regulators, and adaptors).

In a fully developed essay, please do the following:

1. Provide a complete definition, in your own words, of each kinesics category (emblem, illustrator, affect displays, regulators, and adaptors).

2. Write an original example for each of the five kinesics. Make sure the examples are complete and clear. They also need to be 100% original (i.e., not re-used from your Survivor Response Paper).

Question 5.

Chapter 8 introduces several theories to explain why we form relationships with others. One such theory is Attraction Theory.

In a fully developed essay, please do the following:

1. Provide a complete explanation, in your own words, of Attraction Theory. Be sure to include, specifically, definitions for appearance, proximity, similarity, and complementary difference.

2. In addition to the above definitions, provide two distinct, fully explained examples for each. Please note that for appearance, only one example you provide can be based on a person's perceived beauty or good looks. For the 2nd example, think of other ways we might experience appearance attraction.

Question 6.

Chapter 12 provides an overview of conflict management, including a discussion of John Gottman's Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (criticism, contempt, stonewalling, and defensiveness).

In a fully developed essay, please do the following:

1. Provide a complete definition, in your own words, of each of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. And provide an original example for each.

2. Explain, in a detailed, fully developed paragraph or two, why each of these behaviors is so detrimental to productive conflict resolution.
